This newsletter features peer-reviewed research, systematic and narrative reviews, clinical studies, case reports, technical notes, expert commentaries, patient experiences, and rehabilitation protocols from both independent researchers and the NeuroMuscular Taping community. Our objective is to support healthcare professionals in making informed clinical decisions by integrating the best available scientific evidence with clinical reasoning and patient-centred rehabilitation.
At the NeuroMuscular Taping Institute, we believe that progress in rehabilitation depends on the continuous exchange of knowledge. We therefore encourage clinicians, researchers, educators, and healthcare professionals to publish and share their clinical experiences, innovative treatment approaches, research findings, and evidence-informed practice. Through this collaborative process, we can collectively expand our understanding of rehabilitation science, improve treatment strategies, and contribute to better patient outcomes worldwide.
Are All Taping Methods the Same?
One of the aims of this newsletter is to clarify the important methodological differences between NeuroMuscular Taping (NMT) and other elastic taping approaches. Although terms such as kinesiology taping, Kinesio Taping, and NeuroMuscular Taping are often used interchangeably, they represent different therapeutic philosophies, application techniques, and clinical objectives.
Developed in Italy in 2003 by David Blow, NeuroMuscular Taping introduced a distinctive decompression methodology based on the application of elastic tape without tension to skin positioned in maximal elongation. As the skin returns to its resting position, characteristic convolutions are created that gently lift the superficial tissues, increasing interstitial space and promoting physiological decompression. This approach is designed to optimize lymphatic drainage, microcirculation, tissue oxygenation, proprioceptive input, and functional movement while supporting the body’s natural healing processes.
Rather than functioning as a passive support or stabilizing technique, NeuroMuscular Taping is integrated into a comprehensive system of clinical reasoning that guides evidence-informed rehabilitation treatment choices. Applications are selected according to the patient’s pathology, stage of tissue healing, functional impairments, and rehabilitation goals. This individualized methodology is now used across numerous healthcare disciplines, including rehabilitation medicine, physiotherapy, sports medicine, neurology, lymphology, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, nursing, and pain management.
