The use of bandages for therapeutic purposes dates back to ancient Greek and Roman times, as illustrated in the Iliad, where Achilles bandages the wounds of Patroclus. This practice, defined as bandaging or applying tape over a traumatized area, aims to limit hemorrhage and encourage the initial stages of healing.
The NeuroMuscular Taping (NMT) Concept stems from a rehabilitation objective that focuses on decompression and dilation. Over the past thirty years, various elastic bandage and taping techniques have been developed worldwide, typically involving the compression of different body parts.
These traditional taping methods use elastic adhesive tape with varying tension levels to provide a compressive stimulus, primarily used in sports treatment.
In Italy, starting in 2000 and consolidated by 2003, David Blow created the “NMT Know-How” and “Intellectual Property – NMT”. The NMT Institute was established based on the development of the NMT concept, playing a crucial role in managing precise training and developing specific treatment protocols for various pathologies and conditions. Since its inception, the NMT Institute has been a benchmark for innovative training programs and has actively participated in numerous volunteer initiatives worldwide. Through proper training, the NMT Know-How is imparted to healthcare professionals, and in collaboration with tertiary education institutions, the NMT intellectual property is shared broadly.
There is often confusion that Kinesiology taping, Kinesio taping, and NeuroMuscular taping are synonymous, which reflects a limited understanding of the underlying methods and techniques. So, what sets these taping approaches apart?
The NeuroMuscular Taping technique introduces a distinctive concept centered around decompression and dilation methodology, distinguishing it from other forms of kinesiology taping and bandaging. Originating in Italy in 2003, this novel taping approach, known as NMT, enhances the process of clinical reasoning. Its foundation lies in specific decompression taping applications, which form the core of this innovative rehabilitation method. Precise application of this technique proves effective in alleviating pain, addressing sports-related injuries, reducing muscle tension, and enhancing athletic performance, rehabilitation, as well as outcomes in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy.
THE NEUROMUSCULAR TAPING INSTITUTE ®
The Training Area of the NeuroMuscular Taping Institute
The training area of the NeuroMuscular Taping Institute was founded as a structure dedicated to the design, coordination, and implementation of training activities. Course certification confirms our commitment to continuous education, aiming to guarantee high standards and training effectiveness for all participants.
All our courses in the rehabilitation and health fields provide CME credits for continuing medical education in accordance with the Health Ministry’s regulations in the respective countries where the courses are held. NMT training adheres to a strict “NO CONFLICT OF INTEREST” clause in medical services education.
To maintain the quality of our educational services, since January 2011, SAVA rehabilitation services, which manages the NeuroMuscular Taping Institute, has obtained training qualification confirming our commitment to continuous improvement and guarantees high standards of effectiveness in our training process.
The Institute is the result of years of experience and research in the rehabilitative medical field by the founder, David Blow. The NMT Institute has been based in Rome since 2003 and has expanded to New York in 2012, Africa (Congo and Ethiopia) in 2013, Indonesia in 2015, South America in 2016, Malaysia in 2017 and in Australia in 2023. David, in addition to training the Institute’s teaching team, personally teaches in hospitals, clinics, universities, and private facilities. The NeuroMuscular Taping Concept (NMT Concept) is widely accepted and used by public hospitals and private clinics.
MISSION STATEMENT
The NeuroMuscular Taping Institute® is committed to creating innovative continuing education programs to improve rehabilitation services.
Our goal is to optimize treatment results through the use of our NMT protocols, helping your patients achieve an active and healthy lifestyle. Our teaching program, featuring specific courses covering many areas in medicine, along with our qualified and certified teaching group, guarantees the acquisition of new, effective, and highly professional treatment skills.
PHILOSOPHY
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
The R&D aspect of the NMT Institute is founded on the creation of clinical experiences and controlled treatment trials, leading to research projects that ultimately modify how we treat our patients. A good idea is not enough; it must be substantiated using correct and precise treatment methodologies. The role of the NMT Institute is to create correct and reproducible training, which forms the basis of all continuing education and is the primary objective of all medical training. Our goal is to ensure that the NMT know-how developed over the last 20 years becomes solid and reproducible medical knowledge.
Evidence-Based Medicine
For NMT publications, please refer to our Evidence based medicine NMT publications: Towards the end of each academic year, numerous university research projects are presented, some of which have been developed into research publications. We are committed to sustaining research and development in collaboration with the tertiary university system.
NEUROMUSCULAR TAPING INTELLECTUAL PROPERTIES
The NMT Institute has pioneered a treatment concept known as “NeuroMuscular Taping,” a decompression taping technique widely recognized in the fields of medicine and rehabilitation. The NMT concept is utilized in physical rehabilitation, sports medicine, nursing, speech therapy, language pathologies, and various other aspects of healthcare. It serves as a therapeutic tool for both the prevention and active treatment of numerous conditions that benefit from enhanced self-healing capacities.
