NMT Volunteer Group

Indication for training projects for NMT International volunteering. There are millions of persons who dedicate part of their time to solidarity and voluntary activities each year. It is however true that volunteering means many different things. Any social solidarity activity carried out free of charge, and generally in an organized form, in favor of the community is defined as voluntary. Historically, the idea of combining volunteering, understood in the broad sense of civil commitment to the community, and knowledge of other cultures, started in Europe immediately after the tragedy of the First World War.

This first experience saw the participation of volunteers from countries that had fought on opposite sides, to work on the reconstruction of some houses destroyed by the bombing. Since then, thousands of international initiatives have been developed with the dual aim of bringing help and testimonies of concrete solidarity in difficult situations. In this regard, there are very different experiences. Development cooperation is the most commonly known form.

NMT Volunteer group is a non-governmental organization that plans and implements development aid through medical service trainings in the countries of the southern hemisphere (commonly Latin America, Africa and parts of Asia) as well central america and east europe. The NMT Volunteer Group is managed by a collaboration of international volunteers, who have particular medical services specializations and professions with specific skills passing well needed Know-How to the services in those countries.

If you wish to collaborate in the realization of any of the following projects you may contribute economically or offer time, expertise or any other service that may help in the project reaching its objective. All of the following projects are already under way and require that evan small contribution to reach its goal. If you have a specific project that you would like to undertake in the area of training then let us know. The NMT volunteer services are completely self funded through our continuing education programs and specific project donations.

ETHIOPIA

Amputation and Phantom Pain treatment clinical trial. Amputation of the upper or lower limb and continuously increases due to car accident or vascular pathologies such as diabetes, ulcer or subsequent trauma. Cases in the US and over 200,000 and in Europe reach 250,000. Traumatic amputation in Ethiopia instead is a direct result of war and land/human mines which continue to devastate the country. Unmapped mines continue to be the principal cause of juvenile amputation in the region. The Ethiopian/Eritrean war and conflict that has decimated the country over the last 30 years has created a whole generation of people with disabilities that maintains poverty in one of the poorest countries. The pain of the amputated part is a more than common condition that to date does not find solution nor explanation in neurorehabilitative or vascular medicine. Effective treatment of Phantom pain continues to elude both physicians and physiotherapists who work in this environment. Neuro modulation of peripheral innervation by a decompressive action of NeuroMuscular taping is finding a series of important clinical results. This is a research study indicating the effectiveness of NMT rehabilitation in phantom pain reduction and consequent improvement of social/employment factors through increasing life quality and working ability.

NMT Training for Club Foot rehabilitation. Club foot is a devistating disability that has been widely studied and many countries have implimented corrective treatments for children from an early age. The are 2 main treatments which cover corrective surgery and corrective splinting and casting. Surgery techniques often require follow-up surgery to continue the lengthening of muscle and tendon fibre during the growing years. Casting is concentrated in the early years upto 5 years old. Evan so, these 2 techniques are considered the gold standard – recurring mal alignment problems and returning club foot remains a significant problem for most services dealing with Club foot. Corrective and specific Physical Therapy rehabilitation is required during the child’s growing years to reduce the debilitating effects of this pathology. An estimated 600 children under the age of 3 are in treatment in Kinshasa, Congo. Club foot remains a quality of life debilitating condition in all communities in Ethiopia.

This project is part of a multicentered unified Indonesian stroke treatment program. Stroke is a devistating disability that may be divided into 2 aspects ischemic, due to lack of blood flow, and hemorrhagic, due to internal bleeding. the major risk factor universally recognized is cardiovascular malfunctioning due to life style and eating tendencies. Smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, modern day stress factors and a sedentary life style are all well know causes of stroke and age is not a protective factor when preventing stroke outcome. In many countries the incidence of juvenile and young age stroke is on the increase. Some factors maybe controlled and others may not in our complex society.  All stroke programs have difficulty in pursuing the return of normal functioning moving towards a neuro-motor rehabilitation treatment over time. Costs are elevated for long term care, real positive outcomes are often difficult to achieve and the extremely high percentage of patients that do not recover from stroke call for new and innovative therapies that can follow patients over time. NeuroMuscular Taping is a cost effective means of improving overall neuro-rehabilitation outcomes. This project will train medical professionals and inform stroke patient associations and medical staff on the advantages of low cost continual care for stroke. Project start date 2018-2019.

Facial Paralysis and Bell’s Palsy treatment project. Bell’s palsy is quite common in tropical and developing countries where there are limited therapy options to reduce symptoms. The first priority in treating Bell’s palsy is to eliminate the source of nerve damage as quickly as possible. The disease is a consequence of nerve inflammation and minor/major nerve compression over a short time period which can result in mild and temporary damage. As time goes on with continuing, constant or increasing compression and without specific treatment, damage to the nerve may also increase. NeuroMuscular Taping (NMT) is a therapeutic resource which helps to reduce pain and inflammation, increasing blood circulation to weak muscles while reducing overall recovery time. Starting from the first NMT application the patient presents an increase of forehead wrinkles, induced eyelid movement and an improvement of lips and mouth coordination and capacity. The project is to create specific training for occupational therapists to assist patients in low income areas of Indonesia.

VOLUNTEER MEDICAL AND HEALTH SERVICES TRAINING

The NeuroMuscular Taping Institute has been organising volunteer projects in developing countries for many years, providing a high level of specialisation in the rehabilitation area, using simple, effective and low-cost methods. The realisation of these projects is only possible thanks to a collaboration of local organizations, which already operate in the area. Each project includes an initial training course of 4 days, followed by tutoring and clinical verification and training by the NMT Institute team. The duration of each project varies from 10 to 20 days. All organisational and logistical expenses are generally covered by the Institute or by an institutional sponsor. The expenses instead are covered by the volunteers: air ticket, visa, possible mandatory vaccinations. All other costs are covered by the NMT Institute.

Volunteers are required to have a spirit of adaptation, ability to work in groups, willingness to pass on their valuable treatment KNOW-HOW and enthusiasm to participate in the project. Putting yourself on the line is not easy for anyone. We believe in “lifelong learning”. We consider opportunities for civil and social engagement and acknowledgment of new cultures offered through international volunteering can be an effective tool to promote and stimulate your “active global citizenship”. When you choose to take part in a volunteer project, you need to be sure to start with the right predisposition of mind, be able to accept challenges that you may meet along the way, unexpected difficulties, you must be able to get involved leaving your own comfort zone and leaving home any kind of prejudice while remaining open to welcome new knowledge.

To participate simply send the completed application form (request at segreterianmtinstitute@gmail.com) together with your CV. If you are chosen, you will receive confirmation (by email) and we will start the organizational procedures.

Why choose to participate in NMT Volunteer Projects? Because it is a training experience from both a professional and personal point of view. Because you receive more than you give. Because it allows you to know different realities enriching, empowering, and challenging your personal mind sense enhancing your inspiration and quality of life.
